Abstract

The Yonghung Formation of the Choseon Supergroup near Machari area in Yeongweol, Kangweondo, Korea, can be divided into 8 lithofacies based on lithology, sedimentary structure and texture. Each lithofacies represents a corresponding depositional environment as follows: 1) laminated dolomite lithofacies-supratidal, 2) solution-collapsed breccia lithofacies-supratidal, 3) massive black fine dolomite lithofacies-supratidal to upper intertidal, 4) flat pebble conglomerate lithofacies-supratidal to upper intertidal, 5) argillaceous limestone lithofacies-intertidal to supratidal, 6) wackestone to grainstone lithofacies-subtidal, 7) bioturbated limestone lithofacies-subtidal, 8) stromatolite lithofacies-supratidal to subtidal. The Yeongheung Formation shows four transgressive cycles from the base. Each cyclic unit is about 30 to 150m thick. This cyclicity appears to have resulted from relative sea-level change and/or subsidence rather than sedimentation rate.
