Abstract

Many diagnostic sedimentary textures and structures are observed to infer the climatic and salinity conditions during deposition of the Middle Ordovician Yeongheung Formation. They are various forms of evaporite mineral and nodule pseudomorphs, enterolithic folds, solution - collapse breccias, tepee structures, oolitic grainstones, and cryptalgalaminites. Extensive development of algal mats (cryptalgalaminite) and the presence of oolitic grainstones, along with paucity of bioclasts and bioturbations in tidal - flat sediments, are suggestive of hypersaline conditions during deposition of the Yeongheung Formation. Development of abundant evaporite pseudomorphs and some evaporite - related structures, such as enterolithic folds and solution - collapse breccias, suggests that the climate was dry enough to produce some growths of evaporite minerals within the tidal-flat sediments. Evaporation - dominating, dry climate conditions are also indicated by extensive dolomitization of tidal - flat facies and presence of tepee structure. The above lines of evidence suggest that hypersaline and evaporation - dominating, dry climate conditions were maintained during deposition of the Middle Ordovician Yeongheung Formation. Comparison with other sedimentary sequences of a comparable age also supports this interpretation.
