The Ambiguous Concepts of Place and Placeness

Abstract

This study defines the concepts of place and placeness. First, it points out the problems of the existing perspectives in the planning and design of environment. Second, it clarifies the meanings of a Chinese character 場所(changsuo) and place. Second it examines some basic concepts of place and the relationship of its close terms. Third, it discusses the derivative concepts of place-spirit of place, sense of place, place identity, place attachment, placeness-and the relationship of them. By clarifying the concepts of place and placeness, this study concludes that place can be understood by the totalities of space, location, landscape, and time, and that placeness is the state which authenticity and insideness are obtained by the relationship between man and his setting.
