Abstract

Mineralogical and textural study for a weathering profile of Cretaceous Palgongsan granite shows that halloysite is a major weathering product of plagioclase and that a small amount of hydroxy-interlayered smectite has formed in the lowermost part of the profile. Halloysite was initially precipitated along micro-fissures of plagioclase as wrinkled walls of compact aggregates forming a boxwork structure. In a later stage, halloysite particles eroded from soil surface were transported in suspension by rainwater migrating downward and coated the walls of compact halloysite aggregates. Hydroxy-interlayered smectite was precipitated from stagnant Si-rich solution in the narrow micro-fissures of plagioclase during the earliest weathering stage. As voids were widened by continuous dissolution of plagioclase, halloysite was precipitated dominantly throughtout the profile from rather diluted solutions under mobile environment. Halloysite is believed to have formed as a kinetically metastable mineral prior to kaolinite in the relatively young weathering profile.
