Abstract
This study provides with a methodology for determining the instream flow needs, such as minimum flow depth and flow velocity, required for fish habitat conservation. In this study data from U.S. and Japan were examined, and the stream and fish habitat characteristics in Korea were analyzed. Based on these preliminary analyses, availability of data and expenses on the use of each method, a method for determining the instream flow needs has been suggested Ripples in the streams are considered as critical sections where flow depth and velocity become critical first at dry periods. Normal flow is considered for hydraulic calculation. The method developed in this study has been applied to the Keum River. The river reach concerned expands from the Daechung dam to Kangkyeong, a 130 km reach. As results, the representative species in the Keum River reach is revealed to be Hemibarbus longirostris, the instream flow needs for which is estimated to be about 30cms.
