Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of OPAC user interface in academic library setting, particularly on the basis of the user group's information searching behavior. Both survey and experimental methods were used for data collection. For the survey, 52 graduate students with various academic background were selected, and 8 out of 52 were chosen for the retrieval experiments using the SOLARS of the Seoul National University. The findings of this study suggest that both (unction and design of the SOLARS user interface should be improved to become a more user-friendly OPAC system.

이 연구의 목적은 OPAC 이용자 인터페이스의 품질을 실제 이용자의 관점에서 평가하는데 있다. 연구의 대상으로는 1997년 12월 현재 국내에서 개발된 OPAC중에서 시스템의 기능과 디자인이 가장 우수한 것으로 조사된 서울대학교의 SOLARS를 선택하였다. OPAC 이용자의 일반적 특성과 탐색행태를 알아보기 위한 설문조사를 52명의 대학원생을 대상으로 실시하였으며, 이중에서 8명을 선정하여 SOLARS를 이용한 검색실험을 시행하였다. 연구의 결과는 SOLARS가 보다 이용자-친화적인 OPAC이 되기 위해서는 이용자 인터페이스의 기능과 디자인을 대폭적으로 개선할 필요가 있음을 보여준다.
