Effects of Semen Carthamus Tinctorius L. Aqua - acupuncture on the Experimental Osteoporosis

Abstract

The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of semen carthamus tinctorius Laqua-acupuncture on the total bone mineral density(BND) and the trabecular area of proximal tibia in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats. The results were as follows: 1. In total bone mineral density(BND), Control group(ovariectomized and saline aqua-acupuncture) were decreased $3.2\%$ compare to that before the experiment. Estrogen group(ovariectomized and estrogen injection) were increased $2.9\%$ compare to that before the experiment. Exp I. II. III group(semen carthamus tinctorius L. aqua-acupuncture, repectively 5㎕, 50㎕, 150㎕) were respectively decreased $0.8\%$, $1.4\%$, $0.5\%$ compare to that before experiment. 2. In trabecular area in epiphysis of proximal tibia, Control group were decreased $1.7\%$ compared to that in sham group(sham operated and saline aqua-acupuncture). Estrogen group were significantly increased $3.5\%$ (P<0.005) compared to that in control group. Exp. I. II. III groups were significantly increased respectively $5.8\%$, $5.4\%$, $4.1\%$ (P<0.05) compared to that in control group. 3. In trabecular area in diaphysis of proximal tibia, Control group were signifieantly decreased $12.9\%$ compared to that in sham group(P<0.05). Estrogen group were significantly increased $14.7\%$(P<0.05) compared to that in control group. Exp I. II. III groups were significantly increased respectively $11.9\%$, $6.5\%$, $10.5\%$, (P<0.0005, P<0.005, P<0.0005) compared to that in control group. From the above results, It suggested that semen carthamus tinctorius L aqua-acupncture can be used to decrease in bone turnover and increase in bone mass in osteoporotic rats induced by ovariectomy.
