Synoptic Environment Associated with the Heavy Snowfall in the Southwestern Region of Korean peninsula

Abstract

The synoptic environment caused the heavy new snowfall greater than 10 cm in the southwestern region (Honam) of Korean peninsula is investigated by the composite method using the NMC data set during the period of Nov. 1964 through March 1994. The three surface pressure patterns are classified in the East Asia region when the heavy snowfall occurred in Honam area of Korea. The first pattern is that the Siberian high with the centers above 1050 hPa moves toward the southern part of Yellow Sea. The second is that the Siberian air mass moves toward the northern Manchuria while the weak trough from the China Sea approaches the southern tip of Korean peninsula and develops in the southern part of East Sea of Korea also developing the weak trough over the Korean peninsula. The third is that while the Siberian air mass is moving slowly toward the Yellow Sea, the trough in the northern China moves into the East Sea of Korea developing rapidly to make the low center. In each pattern, the amount of new snowfall in Honam area of Korea is closely associated with the cold advection toward the southern region of Yellow Sea.

호남지방에 10cm 이상의 대설을 발생시킨 종관환경을 1964년 11월부터 1994년 3월까지 NMC 자료를 이용하여 합성법에 의해 조사하였다. 호남대설 발생시 지표면 기압배치 형태는 3가지로 분류될 수 있었다. 첫째는 1050hPa의 중심시도를 갖는 시베리아고기압이 황해남부로 장출하는 경우, 둘째는 시베리아고기압이 만주로 장출하면서 동지나해로부터 한반도 남부로 기압골이 접근할 때, 셋째는 약한 시베리아고기압이 황해로 장출하면서 화북에서 기압골이 발달하면서 동해에서 급격이 발달하는 경우 등이다. 각 기압배치 형태에서 호남지방의 대설은 황해 남부로 강한 한냉이류가 나타나고 있었다.
