Abstract

The interactions between polyelectrolyte based on cationic chitosan and an amphoteric surfactant, N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonia-1-propanesulfonate (DAP), were described. Chitosan films were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin. The binding isotherms were determined potentiometrically and expressed by using the sequence generating function (SGF) method. The degree of binding of the crosslinked chitosan was compared to the degree of binding of chitosan in free solution. A discontinuous volume transition was observed in the crosslinked chitosan gels as the binding with DAP proceeded. And collapse of chitosan gel also occurred. The oleophilic behavior of the chitosan/DAP complex was demonstrated by the affinity of these complexes for oleophilc dyestuff.
