Abstract
The adjustment of a point rainfall depth to an areal depth over a watershed is important for characterizing rainfall-runoff relations and for cost-effective designs of hydraulic structures when design rainfalls are considered. A design rainfall, in general, is the point rainfall depth having a specified duration and frequency. Areal depths are often computed by multiplying point depths by Areal Reduction Factors(ARFs). In this study, geographically fixed-area ARFs are estimated and areal reduction curves are developed in the Han River basin. The estimated ARFs increase for longer duration and decrease for longer frequency. If an area is given and then ARF having a specified duration and frequency are determined, areal design rainfall can be easily computed by multiplying point rainfall by ARFs.
