Abstract

For the economical mass production of the interspecific hybridization, we developed the modified system of mass pollination where controlled pollination was done with pollen mix from good father trees and without pollination bags in a closed greenhouse. Using the system, we successfully produced 206 seed cones (total 2,510 sound seeds) from 64 mother trees in 1999 and 3,331 cones (85,940 seeds) from 215 trees in 2000. The cpDNA microsatellite band patterns among the $F_{1}$ hybrids indicated that all seeds might be derived from the fertilization between pitch and loblolly pine, not between pitch pines. We also investigated the developmental processes of female strobili from mother trees (P. rigida) in the greenhouse. Although the time required for the maturation of strobili showed a large variation among families and among trees within a family, the process of flower development could be divided into six distinct stages. The optimum time of pollen injection for controlled pollination was the sixth stage when the scale was perpendicularly positioned on the axes of female strobili
