A Sex Discriminant Function Analysis by the Dental Measurements of Koreans

Abstract

When the bones of a human being are excavated, the teeth in particular can be a great help in distinguishing the sex of the person because they remain unchanged in terms of physical and chemical characteristics. We measured mesiodistal diameters of the crown of teeth and faciolingual diameters of the crown of teeth of 215 adult dental casts(male 109; female 106) and teeth of the 166 cadavers (male 127; female 39). Among these samples, we made use of only measurement values with statistical significance to obtain discriminant functions by discriminant analysis and to verify this study. Fifty one discriminant functions are obtained through several combinations of independent variables so that they can be applied to the bones of human being found in archaeological excavations. Among them, only 34functions have the statistical significance, showing the correct classification from 64.5 to 89.8%. The other 17 functions are excluded from the discriminant analysis on the basis of Box's M value and Wilks' Lambda value, Among these 34functions, only 8 functions with high classification accuracy are tested. They show the correct classification from 62.8 to 84.6%. The highest classification accuracy can be achieved when all of the lower teeth (I1 to PM2) are used. The functions from the canine tooth of the lower jaw have high potential usefulness because they can be applied to a variety of materials

사람뼈를 발굴했을 때 치아는 물리적,화학적 특성상 가장 잘 남아있어 남녀 구분에 도움을 줄 수 있다. 이에 성별이 확실한 성인 석고모형 215개(남자 109개,여자 106개)와 시신 166구(남자 127구, 여자 39구)를 대상으로 치아머리의 안쪽먼쪽너비(mesiodistal diameter of the crown)와 얼굴쪽혀쪽너비(faciolingual diameter of the crown)를 계측하였다. 이들 중 통계적으로 유의한 계측값만을 이용하여 판별분석을 통한 판별함수를 도출하고 이를 검정하였다. 판별함수는 고고학 유적지에서 발굴되는 사람뼈에 적용하기 위하여 독립변수를 여러 가지 조합으로 하여 51개의 함수를 얻었다. 이 중 통계적으로 유용한 함수는 34개로 64.5~89.8%의 판별력을 보였고, 17개의 함수는 Box's M값과 Wilks'Lambda값에 의해 판별분석에서 제외되었다. 이 중 남녀판별력과 전체판별력이 높은 8개의 함수를 검정해 본 결과 62.8~84.6%의 판별력을 얻었다. 이들 함수 중 가장 높은 판별력을 보여주는 것은 아래턱 치아 전체를 이용한 경우이고, 아래턱 송곳니만을 이용한 함수는 가장 많은 재료에 적용시킬 수 있어 그 유용성이 높다 할 수 있다
