Abstract
‘The Image of the City' by Kevin Lynch (1960) has enormous influences on city design tradition and supplies the elements of city image. The well-known elements are: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. This study focuses on urban residents who have not received city planning and design education or are not working on these profession. Specifically focuses on whether they can discern important image on pairwise comparisons and find out urban design problems with prominent image characteristics. This study adopts AHP(Analytical Hierarchy Process) technique to compare Lynch's image elements. Major findings are that there is the image difference between residents group and experts group, and the cognition level for the residents by site area is differ. The residents recognized the district element as the most prominent in the study area while the experts recognized the edge element as the most. The residents' image is well recognized the apartment districts side by major roads while they are not likely recognize the interior districts and roads of the study area.
