The Influence of Type of Computer and VDT Work on the Dryness of Eye

Abstract

Purpose : This study was performed in order to discover the influence of the different types of computer and VDT work on the dryness of eyes. Methods: Forty people without eye disease were included in this study. The frequency of blinking, BUT and width of palpebral fissure were measured after working on documents with desktop computers and laptop (notebook) computers and playing computer games at PC-room for 30 minutes each. Results: The BUT value was 7.0${\pm}$2.52 seconds after working on document with laptop computers and 5.7${\pm}$1.86 seconds with desktop computers. Whereas the frequency of blinking was almost the same, the width of palpebral fissure was 6.6${\pm}$0.95mm in the former and 7.7${\pm}$1.07 mm in the latter. After playing computer games at PC-room for 30 minutes, the BUT was as low as 4.6${\pm}$1.6l seconds. The frequency of blinking was as low as 7.7 ${\pm}$2.52 times/minute, and width of palpebral fissure as high as 9.2${\pm}$1.24 mm. Conclusions: The highest value of palpebral fissure and the lowest value of BUT were obtained after playing computer games at PC room. These results indicate that the most severe dryness of eyes results from playing computer games at PC room and leads to eye fatigue easily. This was followed in the order of severe dryness by working on documents with desktop computers and laptop (notebook) computers. Therefore, proper rest during computer work, use of artificial tears and improved environment of the VDT working room are required.

목적 : 컴퓨터기종과 VDT 작업종류가 안구건조에 미치는 영향을 알고자 함이다. 대상과 방법 : 정상인 40명을 대상으로 데스크탑컴퓨터와 노트북을 사용해 일반문서작업을 하게 하고, PC방에서 컴퓨터게임을 하게 했다. 각각 30분 작업 후 눈깜박임횟수, 눈을막파괴시간(BUT) 및 안검열높이를 측정해 안구건조를 평가하였다. 결과 : 평균 BUT값은 일반문서작업에서 노트북과 데스크탑컴퓨터를 사용했을 때 각각 7.0${\pm}$2.52초와 5.7${\pm}$1.86초로 후자에서 낮았다. 안검열높이는 각각 6.6${\pm}$0.95 mm와 7.7${\pm}$1.07 mm였으며 눈깜박임횟수는 차이가 없었다. PC방에서 데스크탑검퓨터로 게임할 때의 snsRKaqkrdlaghlt수는 7.7${\pm}$2.52회/분으로 일반문서작업 때의 13.9${\pm}$3.52회/분보다 적었으며, BUT값고 5.7${\pm}$1.86초에서 4.6${\pm}$1.61초로 감소하였다. 안검열높이 또한 9.2${\pm}$1.24 mm로 일반문서작업 때의 7.7${\pm}$1.07 mm보다 증가해 안구건조가 심하게 유발되었다. 결론 : PC방에서 게임을 할 때 가장 심한 안구건조를 유발해 심한 눈의 피로를 조장하였고, 데스크탑컴퓨터, 노트북작업의 순으로 안구건조가 줄어들었다. 그러므로, PC방에서 컴퓨터게임을 할 때에는 적절한 휴식, 인공눈물의 사용 및 작업환경의 개선이 요구된다.
