Dental Aesthetic Index(DAI) of Adolescent in Chollabukdo-Province, Korea

Abstract

Introduction : Dentofacial anomaly gives very important affects not only physical health and psychological health of a person but also social activities. DAI is an useful criteria to analyze beauty of face in a social point a view. This study was based on the DAI of young adults(12, 16 year-old) in Chollabuk-do Province Korea, whether DAI had negative influence on them mentally and socially or not. It also gave information about the distribution of risk group and the relation of DAI depending on age and sex. Material and Method: Young adults (242 persons of 12 year-old and 295 persons of 16 year-old) were selected randomly in Chollabuk-do Province Korea. DAI was examined by direct oral inspection with CPI probe. The components of DAI by Jenny was estimated and analysed by SPSS/PC+. Results: The mode scale was 20-25, and the median value was 22. There was no statistically difference in age groups. It showed a tendency of sexual difference, but there was no statistically difference between male and female. Jenny recommended those higher than 36 of DAI to discuss their matters with a orthodontist. It was estimated who having a DAI of 36 and higher, mental and social disorder could be a serious problem. 3.9% were reported to have a DAI over 36 referring 6.3% of the young adults in the national level of Korean adolescents. This shows that the young adults of Chollabuk-do Province tend to have lower level of mental and social disorders than that of national level due to problem of dental aesthetics. Conclusion: The median value of the young adults in Chollabuk-do Province Korea was 22, and no statistical difference was found in age and sex. The percentage of young adults that could raise mental, social disorder for having a DAI above 36 is 3.9%.
