Abstract
This study aims at elucidating the hydrogeochemical characteristics and evolutional trends of water qualities of springs which were identified and analyzed by Jeju Provincial Government(1999). Water quality data of 389 springs were reviewed and 345 out of them were intensively analyzed using graphical interpretation techniques and factor analysis. Wide ranges of EC, TDS, Cl, Na and $NO_3$ indicate that spring waters in Jeju have been affected by three different hydrogeochemical processes, that is, natural water-rock interaction, seawater mixing and artificial contamination. Geochemistry of spring waters at high altitude area(> 600 m m.s.l.) shows background level of dissolved contents and is characterized by no dominant--$HCO_3$water type typical of fractured basalt aquifer. Concentrations of most chemical components of spring waters varied inversely with their altitudes. It was identified that all components start to deviate from background values in content at the middle altitude area between 200 m and 600 m m.s.l. And it was shown that the concentrations of major components of spring waters were rapidly increased with approaching to coastal area(0 m ∼ 10 m m.s.l.). Dominant anion type of springs also progressively changes with altitudes, namely, from bicarbonate type(high altitude area) through no dominant or nitrate type(middle altitude area) and nitrate type(low altitude area) to chlorine types(coastal area). It was identified that areal distribution of hydrogeochemical characteristics of spring waters showed regional differences. The eastern part of Jeju Island is characterized by intensive and extensive influence by seawater mixing, but shows less evidence of artificial contamination which is dominantly observed at the overall low altitude areas of the southern part. Artificial contamination is also partly observed in the middle altitude areas of the northern part and in the coastal to low altitude areas of the western part. Two factors that explain the chemical processes and the source of ions in the spring waters in the study area are identified. Factor I reflects hydrogeochemical process related to seawater and factor II that includes mainly nitrate indicates process related to artificial contamination.
