Abstract

The effects of period of low temperature treatments on the dormancy breaking of asparagus for year-round production were investigated using three year old ‘Excel’ sparagus plants. Crowns from three year old plants grown in the field were transplanted to the greenhouse. Following the accumulated time of low temperature below 5$^{o}C$ for 250, 500, 750, 1,000, 1,250, 1,500 or 1,750 hours, they were exposed to 15$^{o}C$ to measure the degree of sprouting. To induce artificial dormancy breaking, crowns under dormancy were treated for 2 or 3 weeks at 5$^{o}C$. Under the open field condition, dormancy began at early December and reached its peak during late December to early January. This corresponded with accumulated hours of 1,000~1,250. Dormancy was broken from mid-January. The results of this experiment indicated that low temperature treatment increased the rates of marketable spear yields to 85% against 31% of non-treated. Also, it was considered that the best digging time of crowns for forcing culture seemed to be early January when the dormancy was broken. The low temperature treatment at 5$^{o}C$ for 3 weeks was most effective for the dormancy breaking of asparagus.
