Abstract

Although the pine moth, Dendrotimus spectabitis, is known as an univoltine insect, recent monitoringof the adult emergence indicates bivoltinism. In southem Korea the adults occurred bimodally in twoperiods from late May to early June and from late August to mid September. To verify two generationsa year field observations were conducted on the stages of eggs, larvae, and pupae in the westem part ofKorea. Recently, two generations a year for the D. spectabitis have become ubiquitous m southem Korea.Even the third generation eggs were found in the middle of October 1999, when the mean temperatureof September was higher by ca. 2.5 C than that of recent years. This indicates that the increasingtemperatures may produce the moth popupltions over two eenerations per year. The adult emergence datafrom 1969 to 1971 indicate that the typical single generation occurred in the midwestem regions of Koreasuch as Seoul and Yangpyung. In comparison, double, mixed (single and double), and single generationsoccurred in the southem regions such as Kwangju, Chunju, and Jinju, showing annually and spatiallychangeable voltinism in the moth population.
