Preparation and EMI Shielding Characteristics of Polypyrrole-Nylon 6 Composite Fabrics

Abstract

Polypyrrole (PPy) was Polymerized chemically and electrochemically in sequence on nylon 6 woven fabrics, to obtain Polypyrrole-nylon 6 composite fabrics (PPy-N) with high electrical conductivity. The electrochemical polymerization (ECP) process was carried out in an electrolyte solution, where the composite fabrics prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization (COP) and stainless steel plates were used as the working and the counter electrodes respectively, at room temperature for 2 hours under a constantly applied current density. Effects of polymerization conditions of COP and ECP on the properties of the resulting composite fabrics such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) and other characteristics were investigated. The electrical conductivity of PPy-N was approximately 10 S/cm and EMI SE was in the range of 5~40 dB depending on the conductivity and thickness. The physical properties of the matrix were affected by the incorporation of the conducting polymer into the matrix and were not changed during COP.
