Abstract

Phase change material(PCM), eicosane, was microencapsulated by complex coacervation between gelatin and arabic gum. PCM microcapsules were characterized by FT-lR, optical and scanning electron microscopy, image analyzer, and differential scanning calorimetry. PCM microcapsules in slurry state were spherical. Spray-drying method was the most effective in obtaining spherical microcapsules. The mean particle size of PCM microcapsules decreased with addition of s surfactant, and increased with increase in the volume of eicosane and the formation temperature of coacervate. However, it was not dependent on the emulsification speed above 3,000 rpm. Spherical microcapsules gave higher filling ratios.
