Abstract

This study was carried out to establish a subirrigational hydroponic system for a foliage pot plant Ficus benjamina ‘King’ and to examine the reusability of the growing medium resources such as woodchips and rockwool slabs ejected from hydroponic cultures. Hydroponic solution was fed through a subirrigational mat system. The used rockwool, chestnut woodchips, perlite, and peatmoss were mixed at various volume ratios to make 20 different mixture combinations. pH of the medium decreased with the increase of chestnut woodchips. It changed to pH 7 if used rockwool slabs was added. pHs of all the media after use for plant culture were higher than those of the media before use. Electrical conductivity of the control, Tosilee medium, was the highest and it decreased after plant culture. There was no change in electrical conductivity of particles of used rockwool slabs before and after plant culture. Plant growth and development except root length and total chlorophyll concentration were promoted in the 100% particles of used rockwool slabs as compared with those in the control. Therefore, it is concluded that the used rockwool slabs ejected from hydroponic cultures were reusable for the hydroponic culture, and the most effective mixture for the growth of F. benjamina ‘King’ was the 75% particles of used rockwool slabs combined with 25% peatmoss (v/v).
