Effect of Saeng-Ma다-san-Kamibang on immune Response in Mice

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Saeng- Maek-San-Kamibang (SKE) on the immune cells in C57BL／6 mice. SKE (500mg／kg) was administerd p.o. once a day for 7 days. SKE decreased the proliferation of thymocytes and increased the proliferation of splenocytes directly. SKE enhanced the population of helper T (Th) cells in thymocytes and B cells in splenocytes and did not affect the population of Th and Tc cells in splenocytes. SKE enhanced the production of ${\gamma}$-interferon from Th1 cells in thymocytes, but did not affect the production of interleukin-4 from Th2 cells. SKE did not affect the production of nitric oxide in vivo and in vitro system. SKE enhanced the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages in vivo, but decreased the phagocytic activity in vitro. These results suggest that SKE has a potent activity on the specific immunity, induced by ${\gamma}$-IFN from Th1 in thymocytes and the proliferation of splenocytes directly, and the non-specific immunity induced by phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages indirectly.
