Effect of Rosemary Essential Oil on Autonomic Nervous System in Healthy Adults

Abstract

Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effects of rosemary essential oil on autonomic nervous system in healthy adults, using the power spectrum analysis(PSA) of heart rate variability(HRV). Methods : 20 healthy volunteers, 16 men and 4 women participated in two balanced, randomly distributed groups. 10 volunteers(named control group) inhalated distilled water for 5 minutes while resting. Each test took 30 minutes. the initial 10 minutes were defined as baseline period(pre-Aroma period), the following 10 minutes as the Aroma period and the last 10 minutes as the post-Aroma period. HRV was measured for 5 minutes in each period. Result : In control group, heart rate showed a significant decrease during the Atoma period(p=0.007). In rosemary group, heart rate showed a significant decrease during the post-Atoma period(p=0.047). But there were no significant difference between both groups on all components in HRV. Conclusions : The results suggest that rosemary essential oil in healthy adults is not associated with sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Further study is needed for investigating the effects of aromatherapy on autonomic nervous system.
