Abstract

This study was can-ied out to clarify the effects of thinning and pruning on net rainfall and interceptionloss at the planted forest of Abies holophylta m Gwangneung, Gyeonggi-do. It aims to supply afundamental results, which need to develop the techniques on forest practices to increase available waterresources in a coniferous forested watershed. The Abies hotothytIa forest had been established in 1976 andpractised from February to July, 1996. Total and net rainfall were monitored during the periods of Juneto October, 2002. Tipping bucket rain gauge recorded total rainfall. ThrouKhfall and stemflow weremeasured by custom-made tipping bucket and CR10X data logger at each lOm x lOm plot at intervals of30 minutes. Interception loss at the thinned plot decreased by 17.6% compared with the unthinned plot becausethroughfall and stemflow produced more in the thinned plot than the unthinned plot. The relationshipsbetween total rainfall and net rainfall or interception loss were linearly in both plots. Changes of foreststructure parameters such as canopy storage capacity after thinning and pruning were analysed to use theregression equations above. Canopy storage capacity at the thinned plot was less than the unthinned plotowing to reduction of crown coverage after thinning. While on the other, proportion of rainfall which isdiverted to stemflow and stem storage capacity showed reversely because DBH of the thinned increasedmore than one of the◎nthinned. P교ameters related in interception loss◎ere analysed다iro닌토h the relativeequations of total rainfall and interception loss. Average evaporative rate from the saturated canopy surfaceof the thinned was two times as much as one of the unthinned but canopy storage capacity and the amountof evaporation during events showed similarly at both plots. % of interception loss reduced at both plotsas total rainfall and input rate of rainfall increased. Coniferous-planted forests should be practised timelyin order to augment available water resources because % of interception loss at the unthmned plot aged26 years old resulted in being as high as 40%.
