Abstract

The effects of adding NaCl to hydroponic media on the changes of physiological characteristics and sugar content of muskmelon fruits were studies in a greenhouse. The rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were higher at the early stage of NaCl treatment (after 35 to 45 days of anthesis) compared to the control, but decreased sharply at the time of harvest. No difference was found in chlorophyll contents in the control and 20 mM NaCl treated media. NaCl at 40 mM increased chlorophyll contents slightly. During the cultivation, pH was kept at 6.5 when NaCl was treated. Electrical conductivity was higher at the higher concentration of NaCl. The contents of inorganic ions, such as K, Mg, and Na, were increased by higher concentration of NaCl except Ca. Pulp firmness was decreased by adding NaCl to substrate. The accumulation of soluble solid and sugar contents was higher in NaCl treated substrate. On the contrary, the yields of muskmelon fruits sharply decreased in higher concentration of NaCl. Adding 20 to 40 mM NaCl at 30 days after anthesis can produce higher contents of sugar in the fruit of muskmelon.
