Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate chararacteristics of herbicidal symptoms induced by foliar application to barnyardgrass of fenoxaprop-ethyl or cyhalofop-butyl, which belong to aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) herbicides and have been widely used as selective postemergence graminicides. Representative responses could be classified into two typical symptoms; chlorosis/desiccaton in developed leaves and severe cessation of initial growth, followed in a few days by necrosis of the shoot apex. The appearing degree and rapidity of these symptoms were different according to chemicals and application rates. Herbicidal efficacy at 10 day after treatment was higher in fenoxaprop-ethyl than that in cyhalofop-butyl. When the herbicidal responses were investigated with two separate symptoms, chlorosis/desiccaton appeared greater in fenoxaprop-ethyl than cyhalofop-butyl. However, early growth inhibition after the herbicide treatment exhibited greater in cyhalofop-butyl than fenoxaprop-ethyl. And this tendency was more significant in growth chamber than under the condition of greenhouse. These results suggest that leaf chlorosis/desiccation which might be induced by an abnormal membrane function, has more important role in herbicidal efficay of AOPP herbicides, and the future research on causes of these different symptoms might give a clue in more understanding the herbicidal physiology of acetyl CoA carboxylase inhibitors
