Abstract

"Seolhyangchalbyeo", an aromatic and glutinous rice cultivar, was developed by the rice breeding team of National Crop Experiment Station, RDA during the period from 1991 to 1999 and released in 2000. The cultivar is derived from a cross between Miyagaori a Japonica aromatic variety, and Suwon 357, a glutinous line. Seolhyangchalbyeo has medium maturity and about 89cm in plant height. This cultivar is less tillering and higher number of spikelet per panicle compared to Hwaseonchalbyeo. This cultivar is moderately resistance to leaf blast and resistance to bacterial leaf blight (K1 race) but susceptible to virus diseases and planthoppers. The milled rice of Seolhyangchalbyeo has a glutinous and aromatic endosperm. The yield potential of Seolhyangchalbyeo in milled rice was 5.23 MT/ha at ordinary growing season. This cultivar would be adaptable to the middle plain area of Korea.
