Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate turf performance in three different soil systems: multi-layer, USGA(United States Golf Association), and mono-layer system. Multi-layer and USGA systems were built with rootzone layer, intermediate layer, and drainage layer, while mono-layer system only with rootzone layer. Soil depth for multi-layer, USGA, and mono-layer systems was 60, 45, and 30 cm, respectively. Turfgrass entries were comprised of three varieties from Korean lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and three blends and three mixtures from cool-season grass (CSG). Significant differences were observed in turf quality, root growth, and rooting development. Turfgrass quality in any soil system was better in spring to fall than in winter. Multi-layer and USGA systems consistently produced greater quality in visual turfgrass rating, as compared with mono-layer system. Root growth and rooting development were good with multi-layer and USGA systems, but poor with mono-layer system. There were slight differences between multi-layer and USGA system. Early growth and green-up in spring were closely related with multi-layer system, but overall turf performance was better with USGA system. Any turfgrass grown in mono-layer system showed poor quality and produced less root growth, particularly in early spring and in summer. CSG consistently showed greater performance in turf quality, root growth, and rooting development over the Korean lawngrass, regardless of soil systems. Among CSG, Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.) blend was excellent, and perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.) blend poor, while CSG mixture was intermediate between KB and PR. These results demonstrate that multi-layer and USGA systems were considered as the suitable one for the overall performance of top-quality stadium, comprised of CSG and even Korean lawngrass in domestic use of popularity. KB blend or KB-based mixture in combination with a sand-based soil system of rootzone layer, intermediate layer and drainage layer can be most adequate for high quality soccer field such as a worldcup stadium.
