Abstract

This study was performed to investigate the effects of occlusal appliance on speech pattern, especially, related to the articulation of vowels and consonants. For this study, twenty dental students, 10 male and 10 female, served as subjects. Subjects were asked to read seven vowels in isolation form and 18 $C^1V^1C^2V^2$ type syllables in a carrier sentence in the four different speech environments: speaking without splint(normal), with upper CR splint(up), with lower CR splint(down), and with anterior jig(jig). The recorded speech data were analyzed by $CSL^{\circledR}$ (Computerized Speech Lab, Model 4300B, USA) and Wavesurfer. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS $Windows^{\circledR}$ (ver. 10.0) program. The results of this study were as follows: F1 values of vowels of the male subjects were not changed by occlusal splints, but those of the female subjects were changed: F1 frequency of /i/, which is a front and high vowel, increased whereas that of /a/, which is a back and low vowel, decreased. F2 values of vowels both of the male and the female subjects decreased by splints. However, the shape and the area of the vowel chart(vowel space) did not show any significant change by splints. Closure duration of plosives /$p^h,\;t^h,\;k^h$/ allowed differentiation between male and female subjects. As a result, closure duration of the male subjects increased, but that of the female subjects decreased. VOT of both subjects were not changed by splints. Frication noise duration both of an affricate /$tc^h$/ and a fricative /s/ did not change by splints, but the pattern of pure frication noise duration and of aspiration duration between an affricate and a fricative were reverse. The frequency of energy distribution types of the frication noise of an affricate was not changed by splints whereas the frequency of those of a fricative was changed, thus the frequency of the scattered type was increased. Peak energy frequency both of an affricate and a fricative were not changed in the male subjects by splints, but those of the female subjects were decreased.
