The Perception of Female High School Students Regarding the Social Aspects and Ethical Characteristics of Science

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of female high school students regarding the social aspects and ethical characteristics of science. The experimental subjects were 182 second grade high school female students in Seoul, who were divided into two groups without any statistical differences. Students who had studied only textbook with traditional teaching methods are in control group, those who had studied an ethical education in science classes with investigation, discussion, and group activity are in experimental group. Interview was taken after the lecture for the purpose of examining the effect of the ethical education in science classes on female high school students' recognition towared science. According to the results, students were stirred up the ethical consciousness as well as the consciousness about the usefulness of science by the ethical education in science classes.

이 연구에서는 고등학교 과학 ‘소음과 방사능’단원을 중심으로 과학의 사회성과 윤리적 특성에 대한 여고생들의 인식 변화에 대하여 알아보았다. 서울시에 위치한 여자고등학교 2학년 4개 학급 중 2개 학급은 교과서 내용을 위주로 한 강의 중심의 전통적인 수업을 실시하였고, 나머지 2개 반은 교과 내용과 관련된 과학의 사회적 측면과 윤리적 특성들을 도입하여 조사, 발표, 토의, 조별학습 중심의 수업을 실시하였다. 수업 실시 후 학생들의 과학에 대한 인식을 알아보기 위하여 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 실험반에 실시한 과학의 사회성과 윤리적 특성 교육은 학생들에게 과학의 유용성에 대한 인식과 함께 과학과 관련된 윤리의식을 고취시킴을 알 수 있었다.
