Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of S. typhimurium isolated frommesenteric lymph nodes and organs of diseased pigs from November 1998 to April 2001. Thirty-four isolates wereidentified as S. typhimurium by biochemical characteristics and serotypings. The majority of isolates were highly resistantto tetracycline, sulfonamide, streptomycin while highly susceptible to amikacin, cefotaxime, ceftiofur, cephalothin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, neomycin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Thirteen (38.2%) of the isolates were resistant tomore than 10 antimicrobial agents. Fifteen (44.1%) of the isolates were shown as a characteristic penta-drug (ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamide, tetracycline) resistant phenotype of S. typhimurium DT104. However, none of the isolates were shown the specific amplification fragment of DT104 in PCR. These results providedinformation describing the antimicrobial resistance patterns of S. typhimurium isolated from diseased pigs, whichrequired the continuous surveillance system of antimicrobial susceptibility on farm level.
