Abstract
Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the in vitro activities of Terminaliae Fructus, Plantaginis Semen, Cnidii Rhizoma, Taraxaci Herba, Scutellarie Radix extracts against vaginosis-associated Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Gardnerella vaginalis. Methods : In vitro antifungal and antibacterial activities of Terminaliae Fructus, Plantaginis Semen, Cnidii Rhizoma, Taraxaci Herba, Scutellarie Radix extracts were tested by disk susceptibility test. And MICs(Minimal Inhibition Concentration) were determined by broth dilution method. Results : By disk susceptibility test, Scutellarie Radix extracts was found to be the most active against C. albicans, C. tropicalis and G. vaginalis. Terminaliae Fructus extract was active, too. However, Plantaginis Semen and Taraxaci Herba extracts were slightly active and Cnidii Rhizoma extract have little effect on C. albicans, C. tropicalis and G. vaginalis. And Terminaliae Fructus extract had MICs of 5 ㎎/㎖ for C. albicans, C. tropicalis and G. vaginalis, respectively. Scutellarie Radix extract had MICs of 2.5 mg/ml for C. albicans, 5 mg/ml for C. tropicalis and 10 mg/ml for G. vaginalis.Conclusion : This study shows that Terminaliae Fructus, Plantaginis Semen, Cnidii Rhizoma, Taraxaci Herba, Scutellarie Radix extracts have in vitro antifungal and antibacterial activities against vaginosis-associated Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Gardnerella vaginalis.
