Effects of Epimedii koreanum on the Motility of Rat Sperm

Abstract

Objective : This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Epimedii koreanum (淫羊藿) on the motility of rat sperm which is important factor of male fertility. Materials and Method : We chose the 10 of 2-month-old Sprague Dawley rats, and administered the extracts powder of Epimedii koreanum to 5 rats (EK group) and normal saline to another 5 rats (control group) once in a day for 28 days. We observed the change of the body weights before and after administration of Epimedii koreanum extracts and normal saline. After 28 days we isolated their gonad surgically and then we observed the weight of testis, epididymis, vascular gland, and prostate. We looked rats testis tissue through a microscope. Also we examined the total, normal and motile sperm count in testis, and the activity of testicular catalase and peroxidase. Results : We found that the count of total, normal, motile sperm in testis of Epimedii koreanum group showed the significant statistical difference comparing with the control group. The angiogenesis in seminiferous tubule was increased and the increasement of the number of spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocyte was observed in Epimedii koreanum group through a microscope. The activity of testicular catalase and peroxidase also showed statistically significant difference in the Epimedii koreanum group. The body weight and the weight of testis, epididymis, vascular gland, prostate shows no significant difference between two groups. Conclusion : This study shows that Epimedii koreanum can effect the count and motility of sperm, the important factor in male fertility and also promote the activity of antioxidants, atalase and peroxidase, which is the important factor in spermatogenesis.
