Abstract
Osteoporosis is a state of reduced bone mass per unit volume with a normal ratio of mineral to matrix. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is known to be related to estrogen deficiency and give rise to spine and hip fracture in old women.The purpose of this study is to examine what are the effects of the Dangguijihwangyum(DGJHY: 當歸地黃飮) on the ovariectomized rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis.The results of the experiment are as follows:1. Body weight in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated showed no change in comparison with control.2. The level of serum albumin in control group showed significant decrease in comparison with sham. That in DGJHY-treated was slightly decreased in comparison with control.3. The level of serum ALP activity in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated was significantly decreased in comparison with control.4. The level of serum phosphorous in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated showed no change in comparison with control.5. The level of serum calcium in control group showed no change in comparison with sham, and that in DGJHY-treated showed no change in comparison with control.6. The level of serum GOT in control group showed no change in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated was significantly decreased in comparison with control. The level of serum GPT did not significant change among the three groups. 7. The level of serum estrogen in control group showed slightly decreased in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated showed no change in comparison with control. 8. The level of serum T3 in control group showed no change in comparison with sham, and that in DGJHY-treated showed no change in comparison with control. 9. The level of serum T4 in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in DGJHY-treated was significantly decreased in comparison with control.10. Mechanical strength of the femur neck in control group showed significant decrease in comparison with sham. That in DGJHY-treated showed slightly increased in comparison with control.11. Trabecular bone area as well as trabecular thickness in control group showed significant decrease in comparison with sham. Those in DGJHY-treated showed significant increase in comparison with control.12. Trabecular number did not significant change among the three groups.13. Trabecular separation only in DGJHY-treated showed significant decrease in comparison with control.14. Osteoclast number and oseoblast surface in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham. Those in DGJHY-treated showed significant decrease in comparison with control.According to the above these results, DGJHY has shown to be capable of preventing and curing osteoporosis caused by old-aged and postmenopause
