Abstract

Barium ferrite was prepared from a mixed solution of $Ba(NO_3)_2,\;Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ and KOH by the hydrolysis and dehydration through hydrothermal treatment. The characteristics of the barium ferrite, formed in the batch reactor were investigated thru varying the Fe/Ba molar ratio and reaction time in the respective range of $1{\sim}12\;and\;30{\sim}360$ min. Final product obtained was single-phase barium ferrite with a size of 0.3{\sim}1\;$\mu\textrm{m}$. The maximum saturation magnetization and coercivity of the obtained powder were about 51.36 emu/g and 1355 Oe, respectively. compared with the conventional hydrothermal synthesis method, the method using supercritical water remarkably reduced the reaction time for the synthesis of barium ferrite.
