Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the variability of the lower extremity segment couplings effects by fatigue caused with increasing time of running. Eight participants ran on a treadmill up to 2 hours at their preferred running speed. The motion of the lower extremity was recorded using a six-camera Qualisys ProReflex system at operating 200Hz to collect kinematic data. Each of the lower extremity segment angles were calculated in Joint Coordination System in 3D and the quantification of relative motion of each segment coupling was determined using vector coding techniques. The length of mean vector for relative motion across the 5 steps served as the measure of the variability at 5, 30, 60, 90, and 120minutes running at heel strike and toe-off. The conclusion indicated that variabilities between the foot inversion-eversion and the tibia internal-external rotation, the tibia internal-external rotation and the thigh flexion-extention, and between the tibia internal-external rotation and the thigh internal-external rotation coupling during the running were reduced significantly after 90 minutes run compared with 5 minutes run.
