Abstract

Several investigators have evaluated the effects of honeybee venom (Apis mellifer L.) to biological activity such as anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. But, the biological activity of the venom from Asian honeybees (Apis cerana L.) is not evaluated yet. In this study, the production of proinflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), was examined in a macrophage like cell line, RAW 264.7 cells, in the presence of the venom from Asian honeybees (A. cerana) water-soluble (BVW) extracts. RAW 264.7 cells activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were treated with various doses of BVW extracts. Supernatants were analyzed for the production of NO and TNF-α using Griess reagent and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. BVW extracts up to 1 ug/ml still required to inhibit NO and TNF-α induced by LPS. Thease results suggest the possibility that BVW may be effective therapeutic agents for inflammatory diseases.
