Abstract

Two piston cores (01GHP-01, 01GHP-04), obtained from the northwestern Ulleung Basin in the East Sea, were analyzed to study the geochemical characteristics of core sediments. During the Termination I, total organic carbon increased, resulting from an influx of marine organic matter owing to inflow of Tsushima Current through the Korea Strait. The change of characteristics of organic matter and sedimentary facies mainly occurred from the last glacial maximum (LGM) to Holocene. It results from changing sedimentary environments, such as fluctuation of sea-level and paleoclimate. The C/N ratios indicate that organic matters in the core sediments originated from marine environment. Correlations of results from hydrogen index, oxygen index, total organic carbon and $S_2\;peak$ suggest that most of organic matters in the core sediments are Type II. These results also imply to be of marine origin.
