Electrochemical Characterization of Epoxy Coating Including Various Extenders

Abstract

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and direct current method (ASTM G8-96) have been utilized to characterize and monitor four types of polyamide-cured epoxy coatings including different extenders: $CaCO_3$, silica, clay, and talc. To investigate the corrosion phenomena of organic coatings on metal, SS 41 steel with epoxy coatings of thickness of $220\;\mu\textrm{m}$ was prepared for the heavy duty industrial paint. The impedance variation and adhesion at the coating/steel interface were measured during 30 days exposure in 3 wt% NaCl. The degree of water absorption and the onset of the corrosion process at the interface were estimated from EIS parameters by analyzing EIS data using a conventional equivalent circuit model for organic coated metal substrate. In impedance and direct current methods, the decreasing order of corrosion resistance of the organic coating was clay > talc > silica > $CaCO_3$. Nearly constant impedance values for clay and talc, during the 30 days, were can be related to the plate-like structure of extender that contributed to the low moisture permeability due to the compliated diffusion path. It is shown that EIS technique can be useful in obtaining information on the corrosion resistance and delamination at interface between metal and epoxy coatings including the different extenders.

일반적인 폴리아마이드 경화형 에폭시 수지 도료를 기본골격으로 체질 안료인 silica, talc, clay, $CaCO_3$등을 도료 속에 혼합하여 $220\;\mu\textrm{m}$의 중방식 도장계로 도장된 SS 41 시편에 대해 임피던스 측정(EIS)과 직류전류법인 ASTM G 8-96 방법으로 도막특성을 측정하였다. 금속 위의 유기도막에 대한 부식 현상을 조사하기 위해 중방식 도장계로 도장된 SS 41 시편을 30일 동안 3 wt% NaCl 용액 속에서 임피던스 변화를 측정하며, 그 결과를 등가회로에 대해 시뮬레이션해 침적 시간에 따른 도막의 저항과 커패시턴스의 변화로부터 체질안료의 내식성 및 내수성에 미치는 영향을 비교 검토하였다. 임피던스와 직류전류법에서 유기도막의 내식성은 clay > talc > silica > $CaCO_3$의 순으로 평가되었다. 그리고 측정 30일 동안 clay와 talc는 임피던스가 거의 변하지 않았는데, 이것은 도막의 낮은 수분투과율에서 기인하고, 이는 체질안료의 판상형태에 의해 확산 경로가 복잡해지는 것과 관련이 됨을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 중방식 도장의 내식성을 평가하는데 이같은 EIS 측정법이 활용될 수 있고, 도막과 금속 계면의 박리와 부식과정에 대한 정보를 보여 주었다.
