Abstract

This study was performed to investigate the relationship between systemic diseases and oral malodor. The author measured the volatile sulfur compound(VSC) of the patients randomly chosen out of the patients who visited Pusan National University Health Promote Center for a comprehensive medical testing. The patients filled out the questionnaires and were taken oral examination. Their systemic diseases were diagnosed by the specialist. 79 patients (meanage: 50.5 years) consisted of 42 male and 37 female. In this study, Oral Chroma was used to measure oral malodor. This equipment could measure the concentration of intraoral VSC (hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan dimethyl disulfide). All data were compared by unpaired t-test using $Stat-View^{\circledR}$. The result of this study was the followings. 1. There was no significant difference of the concentration of VSC between the groups with and without recognition of oral malodor or xerostomia. 2. The concentration of IbS in the group with tongue brushing habit was lower significantly than the group without the habit(p3. The concentration of VSC was not affected by the presence of prosthesis, calculus deposits or tongue coating. 4. The group with gastrointestinal disease showed the highest concentration of $H_2S$(p5. The concentration of VSC was not affected by lung disease, liver disease. obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.
