Abstract

Reverse osmosis membranes with high salt rejection were prepared by interfacial polymerization using aromatic polyfunctional amine, aromatic polyfunctional acyl halide, and various additives such as polar protic solvent. In this study, m-phenylenediamine in aqueous solvent was used as the aromatic polyfunctional amine, and mixture of isophthaloyl chloride and trimesoyl chloride in hydrocarbon solvent was used as the polyfunctional acyl halide in interfacial polymerization. A small dose of polar protic solvent was added to m-phenylenediamine solution as a lubricant. The permeation and separation performance on electrolytic aqueous solution of the membranes have been investigated as a function of concentration of polar protic solvents. As a result, polar protic solvents showed flux enhancement at high concentrations and salt rejection enhancement at low concentrations.
