Abstract
In this study, a 3-dimensional strut-tie model approach for design and analysis of reinforced concrete pile caps is proposed. To verify the appropriateness of the approach, 71 pile caps tested previously are analyzed by several design approaches for pile caps. The comparison of the analysis results shows that the two-way slab shear and flexural design provisions of the ACI Building Code provide satisfactory coefficients of variations in spite of most conservative strength predictions. The strut-tie model in the ACI 318-02 gives less conservative strength predictions, however, shows larger coefficients of variations than those of the two-way slab design provisions. Another shear design procedure based on the bearing capacity requirement produces unconservative shear strength predictions for lots of test specimens failed due to shear. Therefore, this bearing capacity requirement needs to be revised. The strength predictions by the proposed method are reasonably conservative and accurate. According to the analysis results of this study, the proposed method is a rational strut-tie model approach for strength prediction and design of pile caps.
