Abstract

To document the diurnal variation of precipitation (amount, frequency, and intensity) during rainy season(from June to September) over South Korea, characteristics (amplitude, timing, and number of peak) of diurnal variation have been examined using the hourly precipitation of 60 stations from 1973 to 2002. In general, the diurnal variation is characterized by strong early morning peak and weak late afternoon peak, and the pattern of diurnal variation is mainly caused by that of frequency. However, the detailed analysis revealed that the characteristics of diurnal variation vary with month, precipitation intensity, and geographic region. The amplitude of diurnal variation of July and August are greatly larger than those of June and September. And the general patterns of diurnal variation are not affected by the precipitation regime, the amplitude and number of peak are affected by the precipitation intensity. As the precipitation intensity increases, the amplitude of early morning peak is also increased but that of late afternoon peak is clearly weakened. The characteristics of diurnal variation are clearly dependent on the geographic location. The early morning peak is only appeared along the western and southern coastal region, while both weak early morning peak and strong late afternoon peak are appeared over the central inland region. And the area showing early morning peak is more extensive than that of the late afternoon peak. The types of diurnal variations is classified into 5 types based on the number and the relative magnitude of the peaks. The strong negative correlations between the early morning peak and the height of stations, and the distance from coastal line indicate that the unique pattern of diurnal variation could be closely related to the surrounding environments of station.
