Abstract

A passive microwave retrieval algorithm has been developed to retrieve column integrated water vapor (IWV) in the four atmospheric layers (1000$\sim$850, 850$\sim$700, 700$\sim$500, 500$\sim$200 hPa) from Humidity Sensor for Brazil (HSB) measurements taken at three discrete frequencies near the 183 GHz water vapor line and a 150 GHz window channel. For the development of algorithm one year radiosonde data are used for the construction of training data. Results indicated that the combination of HSB four channel data with the total precipitable water vapor from AMSR-E can improve the IWV accuracies in particular in the lower tropospheric layers where signal is lacking. It was also shown that the IWV can be successfully retrieved in spite of cloud presence when cloud properties are properly included in the retrieval processes.
