Smoking pattern of the dentists in Kyong-gi

Abstract

Objectives: The purposes of this study were to investigate smoking prevalence of the dentists in Kyong-gi and quit-smoking counselling activity for patients in dental clinics. Methods: The 895 dentists who registered Kyonggi Dental Association Meeting in 2003 were recruited as subjects. Questionnaire survey was performed about current smoking prevalence, past smoking prevalence, and smoking cessation counselling activity in dental clinic. Results: Prevalence of current smoker dentists was 24.5%, smoking rate in male dentists was 32.0%, and female dentists were 2.5%. A high respondents rate of total ex-smokers(67.2%) had started smoking at 15-20 years. The reasons of quit-smoking were due to health condition's worse 38.5%, harmful to health 37.3%, and influence to health offamily 7.5%. A many of smokers had tried to quit smoking(65.6%), 52.9% had attempted to quit smoking for 1 week, and 70.7% had planned to quit smoking. In smoking cessation counselling activity, only 14.3% of dentists would advise to quit smoking. However, 74.8% intended to advise to quit smoking but they have no idea about quit smoking program, and 11.3% had no intention of advising to quit smoking. By means of smoking cessation counseling method, 43.9% inquired about smoking or not smoking. The reason of not smoking counseling was due to be busy treating oral problem of patients 37.7%. Conclusions: Smoking prevalence of Kyong-gi dentists was still high compared with Western countries but was low compared with general population and physicians. Therefore, quit smoking programs are needs to dentists in Kyong-gi.
