Abstract
The present study purposed to answer the question of how the suitability of illumination can be explained with regard to the use of urban parks at night. For this purpose, this study determined suitable luminance using independent variables - activity satisfaction, activity suitability and use satisfaction - and independent variables selected in consideration of the aspects of night users' psychology and activities. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) Illumination is the most important environmental factor in the use of urban parks at night and it contributes to the enhancement of variety, accessibility and imagination in using the parks. 2) The suitability of illumination in urban parks is explained with activity satisfaction, activity suitability and use satisfaction, and it increase in proportion to usability, safety and the possibility of standing activities as well as seated activities. 3) According to the result of analyzing the illumination suitability model, illumination has the most significant effect on the enhancement of usability, namely, the increase of opportunities for use in terms of accessibility in the night use of urban parks. The results of this study are expected to provide knowledge necessary for recognizing the importance of illumination and increasing opportunities for the use of urban parks. Moreover, they will be utilized as useful materials, giving implications for planning, designing, installing and managing illumination in various areas including urban planning, environment and landscaping.
