Oral injury and mouth-guards usage in physical education high school in Korea

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate of prevalence and recommend the use of mouthguards in contact sports and non-contact sports to prevent oral injury and preserves oral TMD( temporo-mandibular disorders). Methods: We investigated oral injuries(temporo-mandibular disorders contained) and mouth-guards usage and confidence concerning mouth-guards between contact sports and non-contact sports in Korea. The data were evaluated statistically using chi-square analysis. Results: Prevalence of body or oral injuries experiences was 69.5% for contact sports and 46.1 % for non-contact sports, with 13.5% and 4.4% respective groups having mouth-guards. There were significant differences between contact sports and non-contact sport groups(p0.05). Conclusions: Policies should be developed to require mouth-guard use for these physical education high school students. and trainers must be aware of the high risk of oral injury, temporo-mandibular disorders.
