User rate of fluoride-containing dentifrice among community college students of dental hygiene and non-health related courses

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to survey the user rate of fluoride-containing dentifrice among community college students of dental hygiene and non-health related courses in Korea. Methods: Questionnaires about the use of fluoride-containing dentifrice were distributed to the students of dental hygiene and non-health related courses at 12 community colleges in Korea, April 2004. Collected questionnaires from 696 first-year and 661 third-year students of dental hygiene course and 450 first- or second-year students of non-health related course were analyzed. All collected data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The significance of differences among groups was assessed using chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test. Results: 22 brands of dentifrice contain fluoride among 25 brands of dentifrice used at home. Among 22 brands containing fluoride, 6 brands contains NaF; 15 brands, MFP; 1 brand, combination of NaF and MFP. 99.3% respondents of total respondents use the fluoride-containing dentifrice and there were no significant differences among subject groups. Among respondents using fluoride-containing dentifrice, a NaF-containing dentifrice was used by 35.7% of respondents; MFP, 64.2%; combination of MFP and NaF, 0.2%. Conclusions: The user rate of fluoride-containing dentifrice was assessed as a very high level.
