Caries preventive effects of oral health programs among Habcheon-gun school children in Korea

합천군 구강보건사업의 치아우식예방효과

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate caries preventive effects of oral health programs including pit and fissure sealant, community water fluoridation, fluoride mouthrinsing and oral health education in Habchon-gun, Korea. Methods: Dental surveys were conducted in 2003 on 6 to 14 year old children at Habchon-gun and also on a control group in neighboring area which was estimated to be similar to socio-economical factors to dental caries prevalence. The number of the subjects was 4,164 children in the Habchon-gun and 4,233 children in the control group. The obtained data from these surveys were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package. The prevalence of dental caries and fissure sealants on children’s permanent teeth was assessed using chi-square test and independent-samples t-test between Habchon-gun and neighboring control area. Results: DMF rate of 12-year olds was 61.1% in Habchon-gun and it was significantly lower compared to control area. DMFT index of 12-year olds was 1.84 in Habchon-gun and it was significantly lower compared to control area. The caries reduction rate from the sealant program was calculated as 24.2%, 26.7% at 8- and 12-year olds respectively by the difference of DMFT scores between Habchon-gun and control group. Percentage of 12-year olds with sealants was 96.9% was significantly higher compared to control area. Conclusions: These results suggests that oral health programs in Habchon-gun should be maintained to prevent dental caries on permanent teeth among school children.
