Abstract

The five new towns in the Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA) were developed to alleviate overcrowding conditions in Seoul. However, they have been blamed for high dependency on Seoul due to insufficient self-containment. Given that it takes time for a new town to achieve its original goals by any international perspective, the functional change in the new towns might be going on. This study examines the change of self-containment level using O-D data in the five new towns and this study also examines whether they have the benefit of travel pattern as planned cities. The results reveal that the self-containment level of the five new towns has become higher over the years and they have low auto-dependency as planned cities. This means that the five new towns have potential to become suburban business centers in the future
